The
Gorrell (storm bird) track takes you through the Downey Creek
catchment. King tree ferns, bunya pines, epiphytes and giant
strangler figs are features of the forest in this area. Cyclone
Winifred (category 3) passed through the coastal ranges between
Babinda and Tully with wind gusts up to 250km per hour in
1986.The effect of the cyclone is evident at Downey Creek
by damages to vegetation and the forest canopy.
